Free Law Project Staff 2026

We are seeking a strategic, hands-on director of philanthropy to help us grow our organization in the coming years. Please help us find the perfect person by telling your friends about this role and sharing it on social media. If you think you might be a good fit, apply today.

The courts belong to the public, but since the dawn of the Internet court records have been locked behind paywalls and clunky government websites. We exist to change that. Our organization started in 2010 as the brainchild of Michael Lissner (then a graduate student at UC Berkeley School of Information) and Brian Carver (then an assistant professor at UC Berkeley), with a simple philosophy: court opinions should be freely available online, in forms people can actually use.

Today, Free Law Project goes far beyond that. We are the leading nonprofit bringing transparency and equity to the U.S. justice system through innovative technical tools and advocacy.

Our team has built tools that bring the public access to the legal system—hosting on our website over half a billion court records, providing the world's largest archive of oral arguments, creating databases of financial disclosures of judges, and so much more.

Our tools are used by many different communities, and have been particularly useful for academics, journalists, and many people underserved by the modern legal system. We're proud of the way our data is being used to prompt civic change and bring accountability, as when the Wall Street Journal used our financial disclosure database in its groundbreaking series on judicial conflicts of interest or when our data supported a huge art installation at UC Law San Francisco.

We're a growing organization, and we're seeking a director of philanthropy who can grow with us. This is a great opportunity for someone who has a passion for civic tech, expertise in fundraising programs, and excitement about building a program nearly from the ground up.
